New Jersey Commuters Go Carfree for a Day

Going Carfree for a Day was the challenge presented to motorists by TransOptions during September. Commuters and residents alike were encouraged to use alternative transportation on a day of their choosing to honor World Carfree day that occurs annually on September 22nd.

"This is such a great idea," shared one commuter who biked 45 miles instead of driving. "Hopefully tons of people will do this. We will all be winning by helping the environment," she added.

Carfree Day encouraged motorists to abandon driving their car for one day and help the environment by using alternative transportation. Participants took the train, bus, walked, bicycled, and teleworked. By doing so they traveled 608 fewer miles and saved 562 pounds of pollution from the environment.

All participants were entered into a drawing to win a $50 gift card. An employee at Drew University was the lucky winner. She chose to walk to work instead of driving and commented that, "Carfree for a Day is a good plan that gets people to think about the environment and alternative forms of transportation."
