VMC Honors Long-Time TransOptions Volunteer

TransOptions Volunteer Henry VanDyke at Junior Solar SprintsLong-time Junior Solar Sprints and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Model Car Challenge Volunteer Henry VanDyke has been recognized by Volunteer Management Centers, Inc. as an exemplary volunteer.

VMC included this great piece on Henry as part of their 40th anniversary celebration dinner:

Now in his late seventies, Henry VanDyke is a retired colonel in the US Army and electrical engineer who spent many years working at Picatinny Arsenal. To introduce his students to alternative energy sources and their potential use as transportation fuels, TransOptions offers school districts two educational programs: TransOptions' Junior Solar Sprints and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Model Car Challenge. For the past 12 years, Henry has spent most of his time helping students prepare for these competitions.

Henry works with teachers and mentors students to design, build and test their model cars. He helps them understand gear ratios, aerodynamics, propulsion, electrical current, photovoltaic and hydrogen fuel cells as well as the proper use of hand tools. Henry volunteers at the annual race days, staffing the repair table and guiding students to improve their vehicle's performance. He spends his summers testing fuel cells and solar panels in preparation for the following year's events. Of course, the teachers and students love him. Over the years, Henry has inspired students to seek careers in engineering and the sciences, and many still keep in touch with him today.
