Becoming a licensed driver is an exciting step in a teenager's life. But with the reward and privilege comes real risk. Car crashes are the number one killer of teens in the United States. In fact, car crashes kill more teens than infectious disease and chronic disease combined, according to the CDC (Center for Disease Control). Motor vehicle crashes, most of which are preventable, take about 3,000 young lives each year. New Jersey's Graduated Driver License (GDL) program is a proven method that is saving young lives. Since its enactment 10 years ago, the number of crashes and deaths among young drivers each year has been reduced significantly.
