Air Quality

  • Automobiles are a major source of pollutants found in metropolitan areas through the U.S. Every 10,000 miles a car releases its own weight in pollutants into the air!
  • New Jersey has been designated as a nonattainment area for ground level ozone and carbon monoxide by the federal EPA. In fact, our air quality is the second worst in the nation, after Los Angeles.
  • Reducing vehicle travel is an important step in cleaning the air.
  • Air pollution has serious potential health effects. It can make cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses worse and may contribute to the development of such diseases as bronchitis, asthma, emphysema, and cancer.   Persons with heart or lung disease, the elderly, the very young, and pregnant women are more susceptible to its effects.
  • The 1990 federal Clean Air Act Amendments require that areas with high levels of air pollution take steps to improve air quality. If a region's pollution levels fail to meet federal standards within a certain time, the region could lose millions of dollars in federal funding for highway and other infrastructure improvements.
It all adds up to cleaner air
